Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theater. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the garbage from one of juries. Due to her work she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
